Learn French

Learning French before you leave: a smart and sensible way to prepare your arrival!

Here, we speak French and we are proud of it! The province of Quebec is home to around 8.5 million people, 80% of whom speak French as their native language. French is also Quebec’s official language, the language of public life, work, business, education, commerce and culture. Therefore, learning French will be pivotal to your professional and social integration in Quebec.

Don’t worry: Quebecers are very open to diversity and we find accents from all over the world very charming. Once you’re here, total immersion in the language will do the rest!

Before you leave your country of origin

The Francization en ligne (FEL) platform is a service from the Government of Quebec that allows those who wish to immigrate to Quebec to learn French for free, using the structure, pace and schedule that fit their needs. It also provides contents from Quebec to make your integration even easier. The courses offered range from intermediate to advanced. Specialized modules for specific fields of work are also available as self-paced training.

To be eligible, you must be at least 16 years old and have a Québec Selection Certificate (CSQ) or a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (Quebec Acceptance Certificate, CAQ).

Some courses are also offered abroad by language schools partnering with the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI).

The Government of Quebec can refund the fees paid for French courses that you took in your country of origin, subject to certain conditions. Visit the Obtaining Reimbursement for French Courses Taken Abroad for more information about the eligibility conditions for obtaining reimbursement and to learn how to apply.
